Arianta is the journal of the Society Mollusc Research Austria (MoFA).
Arianta is a peer-reviewed open-access journal that publishes original papers on all aspects of malacological research. Arianta appears once a year. The scope of Arianta covers all fields of malacology. We publish various types of articles: original research articles, review articles, smaller articles on species lists, interesting observations, hitherto unpublished valuable data on molluscs, as well as reports and abstracts of workshops and conferences of the society. Manuscripts are single-blind peer reviewed.
There is no page charge in Arianta. Reprints of Arianta issues are available for a fee upon prior request.

Instruction for authors of Arianta
Arianta is the scientific journal of the Society Mollusc Research Austria (MoFA) that publishes original papers on all aspects of malacological research. By submitting a manuscript, the authors guarantee that the work has not been published or submitted elsewhere. Manuscript acceptance is decided by the editors, the decisions being based on international peer-reviews.
Submitted manuscripts will be initially evaluated by the Editorial Team concerning compatibility with scope and policy of Arianta. Papers will only be sent to review if the Editorial Team determines that the paper meets the appropriate quality and relevance requirements. Manuscripts are single-blind peer reviewed.
It is assumed that authors of submitted manuscripts contributed substantially to study planning, data collection, analysis and interpretation of results and were involved in drafting the manuscript or revising it critically for important intellectual content. It is assumed that no person who meets authorship criteria has been omitted. It is also assumed that all those listed as authors have agreed to be listed and have agreed on the order in which their names will be listed in the manuscript. In the cover letter, the corresponding author declares on behalf of all authors that the manuscript is their original work, it has not been published or is submitted for publication in any other journal, they all agree to be listed as the authors and there is no conflict of interests between all authors and any other party.
After acceptance, authors will be required to assign copyright of their article to the Society Mollusc Research Austria (assigning the Society Mollusc Research Austria the rights to print the work and host it on its web platform). The first author will receive two pdf files of the finished work: one with low resolution (may be hosted on a personal website and shared with fellow researchers) and one with high resolution for printing.
Submission
Manuscripts should be submitted via E-Mail to Helmut Sattmann: team@molluskenforschung.at.
We strongly recommend to submit manuscripts in English language. Submission in German requires prior agreement by the editors. Abstracts should be in English and optionally in German.
If manuscripts report on newly analysed nucleotide sequences, they should be deposited in public data bases like NCBI GenBank or BOLD.
Manuscript structure and formatting
Manuscripts must be submitted in electronic form. One MS Word (or compatible) document should be organized as follows: Title page (title, full names and addresses of all co-authors, corresponding author, key words, short title for running head), Abstract(s) (optionally in two languages), Introduction, Material and Methods, main body of text (e.g., Results, Discussion, Conclusions), Acknowledgements, References, Figure Captions. Please note that authors may depart from the above scheme as the sections of the manuscript will depend on the type of submission. Tables should be numbered consecutively and should be provided as separate MS Word files (or compatible) without using tabulators. Figures should be numbered consecutively according to their first reference in the text. At initial submission, figures may be provided as pdf file(s). After acceptance, all illustrations must be finally submitted as separate jpg- or tif-file(s).
Texts without special formatting. Tabs or spaces as text structures should be avoided. In general, terms should not be abbreviated unless they are used repeatedly and the abbreviation is helpful to the reader. Initially, the word in full should be given, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter only the abbreviation should be used. Species and genus names as well as gene abbreviations should be in Italics.
All illustrations may be submitted as line drawings or as photos. Figure captions should be included in the manuscript text file. Photos should have at least 300 dpi resolution, line drawings 600 dpi, each in the later print size (image width 90 or 184 mm). Other formats are also possible on request (maximum picture width 195 mm, maximal height 220 mm). It is highly recommended to consider combining images in picture plates.
Bibliography
Citations in the text must be documented in the bibliography. The titles must be complete and cited in the original wording. Titles in unusual languages should be accompanied by a translation. Please do not use tabs in the bibliography. For page ranges, en dashes should be used. The literature should be cited as in the following examples:
Author A.M. (1989): Title of the article. Journal title (full title) 56: 1–35.
Author A.M. (1989): Title of the book. Publisher, place of publication.
Author A.M. (1989): Title of the contribution. In: Author, C. (Ed.): Title of the book: 125–135, publisher, place of publication.
Author A., Author B. & Author C. (1996): Title of the article. Journal title (full titled) 56: 1–35.

History of the journal Arianta
A booklet with the title „Arianta“ was published by the Natural History Museum Vienna in 1995 as a documentation of an Workshop on Alpine Land Snails which took place in July 1994 in Johnsbach, Styria. It contained programme and abstracts of the workshop plus results of field studies performed during the workshop. It was followed by several more editions which were irregularly published. With Arianta 7, which was published in 2019 Arianta had become the official journal of the of the Society Mollusc Research Austria.
